Just out of curiosity I thought I'd make this pole. I want to found out the average age WP members moved out of home and see if it makes a nice bell curve.

Nice poll. It should end with "Not yet", in my opinion.

Aw yeah. I didn't think of that. I added "not yet".

Why were you forced to move out at such a young age?

I moved out at 16. I rented a tiny, one bedroom flat for $42 a week and worked at a nearby farm.

I got kicked-out when I was 17 (stayed with my aunt); then, went-off to college (staying, and working 3 jobs, during the summers); then, military----been on my own ever since----so, I checked "17", on your poll.

I went to college on a scholarship and lived in the dorms. I also had a job at a fast food restaurant. I didn't have a car. I didn't live in walking distance to a grocery store and there was no meal service on campus. The school was a commuter school in the middle of an urban area. I had to buy food at gas stations. I was woefully naive to the point of being in danger most of the time. Without going into details...it was truly, truly awful. I was severely depressed for the next few years and barely functioning.

My parents both went to college away from home, made new and amazing friends, succeeded at getting a degree in 4 years, and went on to immediately make more money than their parents ever had. To them, going away to college was this magic ticket. So, they forced it on me. (I wanted to live at home and go to a local college.)

I'm not telling my kids what to do when they become of age. We are saving money for their futures, but I'm not pretending to know the best way for them to spend it. They are different people who will come of age in a different world than I did.

Three PART-time jobs----2 during the week, and one on the weekend. I only really had to work the one on the weekend, cuz it was really good money; but, I got the other 2, so I would have something to do----I didn't know how to NOT work.

Should add:

I'm "living in the bush" material if I don't have a carer giving me lodgings.

I can't function in society.

Haven't left yet.

I hope that autism and other disorders aren't dooming me to a life with my parents / in the mental hospital / in jail.

I don't want to be trapped in the system...

I know but that's still a lot.

I don't know what other disorders you may have as for autism, when you're ready you should be able to move out of home. Some with ASD might move out a bit later than the average NT (I was 25) but I'm sure when the time comes you'll do fine.
