Hello all. I was diagnosed (according to my records at the agency I see a counselor and psychiatrist at) with A.S. about 6 months ago. I never was taken to see anyone for my strange actions growing up ("We thought it was just a bad habit and you'd outgrow it"), nor listened to when I was depressed.
My parents were brought up in the 40's, so I guess it was part of the norm to be ashamed of a family member having a mental illness. Plus while growing up, I was abused physically and emotionally by my siblings. My parents pushed me to the side to focus on them since it could be seen that they were boozing, doping, and sleeping around. Unlike me where my actions were dismissed as nothing.
