Registration for Autscape 2015 is now open!

This is the eleventh annual Autscape event -- a combined conference and
retreat for *and* by autistic people and our supporters.

Autscape is a conference with a difference. It is an autistic
conference, rather than an event about autism. The environment and
content are centred around autistic people's needs, interests and
sensitivities. This year's theme is "Exploring Autistic Space". However,
the programme is varied and some sessions will not even be about autism
at all! All welcome, whether you self-identify as autistic, have an
autism or Asperger's diagnosis, or even are non-autistic.

Location: Giggleswick School, Settle, North Yorkshire, BD24 0DE, UK.
Dates: Friday 21 August - Monday 24 August 2015.
Registration will close in mid July.

To see the fees and register, go to:
http://www.autscape.org/registration

The sooner we know about this year's participants and their needs the
better we and the venue can cater for everyone, so please register as
soon as possible.

If you have any questions about registration, please contact the
registrar, whose e-mail address you can find at the registration page:
http://www.autscape.org/registration

The programme schedule is still under development, but the list of
presentations is available at:

Autscape's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/autscape.org

Autscape 2015 event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/691216734329073/

We look forward to seeing you there!

There seems to be a very interesting presentation scheduled for Autscape this year, "A History of Early Autistic Space". Autistic self-awareness and autistic space began on the early internet. It was in 1992 that a number of autistics got fed up with being patronised by the parents-dominated AUTISM mailing list and started their own autistic-led Autism Network International list. Back then, starting your own community on the net was virtually impossible for mere mortals, so Syracuse University provided the hosting. In 1996, ANI organised the first Autreat conference, which inspired Autscape. Other online community forms such as live online chatting (#asperger) and an autistic-dominated public Usenet newsgroup (alt.support.autism) appeared soon after, sometimes spurring community and organisation in "3D space" too. This lecture will give a broad overview, complete with images, demonstrations and anecdotes, of the history of autistic space as it emerged online and branched out into a "real word" social movement from there.

The list of presentations is available at:

Another interesting presentation scheduled for this year is "Autistic People's Organisations, creating space for change: a case study". The presenter will use the Autistic People's Organisation ARGH (Autism Rights Group Highland) as a case study to explore the creation of Autistic Space/s as a vehicle for collective action, campaigning, political progress and the journey towards Autistic emancipation. She will include examples of what they do, how they do it and why. She intends to leave participants with a feeling that there is no one 'right' or 'wrong' way of being or doing Autistic spaces through organisational means but rather present a picture of what has been possible for ARGH as an example of one approach:

A nice workshop scheduled for Autscape this year is "Spin - Rock - Express - a drama workshop". One of the many natural talents that autistic people have is a gift for acting. This session will be a fun, interactive, empowering drama workshop specifically designed for individuals on the spectrum and through which you will find your inner actor. It will incorporate easy and non-invasive, structured, non-verbal exercises with movement and improvisation, all of which are especially suitable for those who have no experience in acting. All levels of acting experience are welcome:
