What if you could, somehow, get this asteroid into a low orbit around the earth then you might be able to mine it and make a lot of money off it. Ever wonder how close is considered safe?

The only problem is that if there is enough of the precious metals, the price could plummet with an overabundance of it. They would need to do what De Beers does with diamonds. Good luck with that...

Your debt disappears ... only to be replaced by the probably greater debt you'll end up in thanks to the cost of the endeavor, amirite? :P

There are already private companies working on this very venture...

Some moron of a scientist would probably lose control of the darn thing and crash it into this planet, killing us all. Just say NO!!

Also NASA is building a craft to capture a near earth asteroid. Here is a comment on NASA's website: "NASA is developing a first-ever robotic mission to visit a large near-Earth asteroid, collect a multi-ton boulder from its surface, and redirect it into a stable orbit around the moon. Once it’s there, astronauts will explore it and return with samples in the 2020s." So, we will see the results soon enough...

at 1 km wide i don't think the potential impact would be strong enough to annihilate all of humanity...tidal waves and billions in damage, yes.

that's if it doesn't break up, i guess.

A 1 kilometer asteroid would be a major impact far beyond the one in Russia a couple years ago. It would hardly matter if it broke apart...
