Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy that deals with what makes something attractive or beautiful. What standards are there? What fosters them?

Esther Honig, an artist, inspired this experiment. A photo was sent to designers in different countries and they were free to determine what their own cultural standards for women's attractiveness and beauty are and they could alter the photo via photoshop to reflect these standards.

They saved the US photo for last and when I saw it, I thought whoever shopped it wasn't serious and was trying to make a joke and of course I laughed but, at the same time, we are not getting a realistic idea of beauty standards over here. Perhaps there are more than one since we are a melting pot country?

Anyway, it's an interesting little journey into what different cultures have to say about what is attractive about a woman's physique.
