I would draw autism as.... well, how can I say it?

Standing in a maze of sliding shower doors with other people watching from the outside. We can see each other but not well. We can hear each other, but it could be better. We're not even very far apart. We're just in slightly different places, with kind of unexpected and awkward things blocking us from being together.... and it's unclear who is failing to come to whom.

I used to have that recurring dream as a child. My family was on one side, but I just could not remember how to slide the doors open for some reason, and neither could they, even though it is just a clear door. Instead we talked through it to keep each other company until I woke up.
