I do not necessarily do this in person, I just note the pattern in others.

For me, every single conversation will end up like that given enough time. The trick is to keep them short and to the point, and to avoid personal issues. Learning what works as a polite non-answer when others bring up their personal crap helps, though, being the way I am, I had to do it by trial and error, at a painfully slow pace.

Brilliant thread. I've wasted insane amounts of time on this sort of stuff - and on the aftermaths after reacting in some "unacceptable" way.
