The OP is right - the theory that Syrian refugees are a conduit for ISIS IS indeed a completely hyped up none existent threat. There are easier ways to send terrorists to the US than sending them trekking on foot with starving shuffling masses of refugees across the length of the Eurasian landmass who get stymied and detained at every border crossing. If your terrorist operatives weren't ground down to a pulp by the hardship, and actually got anywhere worth attacking - it would take them months to reach any target. A very inefficient delivery system for ordinance.

So asking what's wrong with people who buy into that "threat" is a fair question.

Syria already had refugees from the wars in Iraq. Then their civil war broke out and great cities turned to ghost towns as thousand fled for their lives from ISIS and the other warring parties from Syria (some of whom are a double refugees from Iraq).

The Syrian refugees are obviously not "economic migrants". Though there are economic migrants also flooding in from sub-Saharan Africa to complicate the issue. The Syrians are fleeing for their lives.

If ISIS were sending operatives to attack the US they would either send them via first class airline, or they would just recruit people already living here to attack locally (like the Boston bombers) via the net. Not send them on ricky boats in the Mediterranean to drown before they even got to their intended targets.

For what it's worth, there is one reason that it might actually be good to accept refugees.

There are so many fleeing from areas under ISIS control that they are reportedly having more and more difficulties raising the cash necessary to carry on their crazy wars. The more people that leave, the fewer people that they can steal from to pay their army and buy more equipment for them to kill more people.

That said, I'm only in favor of accepting refugees if they are to be returned to their countries as soon as the threat is over. When refugees bear children here, they should not automagically receive US citizenship because their stay is meant to be temporary and they should expect to return home and rebuild their country at some time in the not too distant future.
