Pretty lame on the part of the cops, if this is an accurate report. People don't know much about autism, but they think they know about weird.
I don't think they can differentiate between Aspie weird and pedophile weird, so they jump to conclusions.
The terrible thing about this is that if this guy was just reaching out to people, it might drive him back into his shell.

i am actually i bit frightened of children because of all this "pedo-paranoia". if somebody so much as looks at them the wrong way: "OH MY GOD! IT IS A SEXUAL PREDATOR! QUICK! CALL THE POLICE!"

just today i saw a little boy wearing a Nintendo shirt. i wanted to tell him that i also like Nintendo, but was too afraid because of stuff like this.

something as simple as:
"oh! you like Nintendo too? i am a huge Nintendo fan."

would somehow get interpreted as some kind of "luring".

^ At least you were able to think this through before saying anything... I might just blurt it out.
Scary, scary. Never thought about it like that before... 8O

i guess that is one thing i can be thankful of my mutism for: i cannot "blurt things out". takes a lot of concentration and coordination to sign.

probably wouldn't have understood me anyway. sign language knowledge in my area isn't very common. i have only "bumped into" one other signer in my entire time learning sign language. and that was just some random encounter at a SUBWAY restaurant.

I think that he should reached for people his age to talk to.

most of us with autism have very hard times connecting to people our own age. any friends we have are usually much older or much younger.

Now people in the community are like ...

"Did you hear that they caught some pervert hanging around the schools trying to lure some girls to his supposed cabin?".

"They are saying he has autism, and that's why he did it".

Conclusion: Autism causes perverse behavior.

I have Asgepers and I make every effort to connect with someone my own age even though I prefer connecting with older people. I always ask permission from the parents of the child to speak to them.

I think too many people in the general public - and that includes law enforcement - see people with autism as potential serial killers, mass murderers, and sex offenders. That's the stereotype we suffer under.
