I guess I'm one of the non-AS autistics here.

There are some members here with PDD, HFA, and a few ADDers here.

As a child, I think I would have been diagnosed as PDD-NOS. I was thrown out of kindergarten for being electively mute. I did very well in 1st grade because everyone had to be quiet and sit at their desks and do worksheets and read books.

I have a good control of my fingers, and movements, I can do eye contact, i am not keen on math or trains. But I never, never succeded in establishing intimate relationships with others. I have always lived alone (I am 73, and now life is getting tough), I cannnot tolerate having a guest in my house for more that two days. Good or bad, I communicate very well with animals especially cats, but also dogs. I am an autie, not an aspie.

I think both auties and aspies can either be emotionally related to others or not so much. I've known very autie children who were extremely huggy and friendly once they overcame their fear of you. I'm not sure we have clear lines between AS and HFA. I think the most distrinctive characteristic of AS is the IQ. The special interests come as the 2nd most distinctive. And 3rd, I think the acquisition of speech where the child begins sounding pedantic and adult-like at a very early age is, in my mind, aspie. I went from saying nothing to speaking in complete sentences at about 2-1/2.

I'm starting to both think of myself as autistic, as well as refer to my autism when speaking to others.

I think that we on the spectrum are more alike than it appears on the surface.

I can relate more to a non-verbal LFA than an NT.

Do you think it's too long? Take this as friendly advice, but never congratulate anybody for his/her age if he/she is older than 40 (or, better older than thirty).

I think I'm PDD so I put 'other autism spectrum' in my profile.

Not me. Anyway it depends on the way you lived and the time you may expect to live and how.

Does having a birthday count as a congratulation?

I have never celebrated my birthday, nor let someone know when it happens. Reporting my age was meant as an encouragement for the autie who started the thread. I am not sure it is a real encouragement. But I discovered only three years ago what my problems were. And if I could have got before to their roots things might have been someway different. It's good to start early to build a livable bubble, o burrow, or little tent or whatever kind of residence for your life. measure well your forces and weaknesses and make the best of them.
I like the term autie. Autistic is not a substantive.
