I am a pantheist raised in an atheist/agnostic household, and I have met several Muslims in my life but am close to few of them. I have started wondering, if this is not disrespectful, about the veil usually found in women and general modesty of men.

I suppose I don't understand the idea that this is protecting modesty, just because it doesn't take much to get the compatible sex going. If I am attracted to someone, I pay physical attention to their face and general body shape. That's it. Men, Muslim or not, go around me dressed modestly all the time, and my thoughts wander. I haven't met many Muslim women, but I still don't focus much on a woman's hair, though I suppose it does play a role.

I hope this isn't a bad thing to say, it's just a passing curiosity I thought I'd put on the online since it wasn't really important. :| I still don't mind, Muslims can dress however they want.

Actually, the Hijab is something that devout Muslim wear in obedience to the Hadith.

The Quran requires the veil specifically for the wives of the Prophet.

The hair covering is a strongly cultural custom on many Muslim countries.
