On October 18, 1985, Nintendo made a huge impact on history, at least in the USA, with its Nintendo Entertainment System, which was essentially a recolored and slightly remodeled Famicom. Since then, much progress has been made in stretching the boundaries of interactive fiction, but there are still a good number of interesting games from before the 8-bit era. Feel free to list or discuss your favorite old video games below. (By the way, post-NES versions & remakes of video games originally made before the North American debut of the NES also count.)

Spacewar (1962)
Pong (1972)
Breakout (1976)
Snake (c. 1978)
Space Invaders (1978)
Galaxian/Galaga (1979/1981)
Asteroids (1979)
Centipede/Millipede (1980/1982)
Game & Watch series (1980-1991)
Missile Command (July 1980)
Pac-Man (1980)
Donkey Kong (1981)
Frogger (1981)
Qix (1981)
Q*bert (1982)
Tetris (1984)

Spy Hunter

I loved this game. It was the only one that I played for years.

Before that, my Brother and I would play Tank everyday.

Oh sure, there's tons of these that I love.

Though, when they were actually out, I was much too young to have played them, really, as I was born in '81. For the 2600 games, I got into them during childhood. For arcade games, I probably got into them much later.

But here's a brief list of a few:

Juno First (arcade)
Jungler (arcade)
Space Invaders (all versions)
Pac-Man (all versions)
Ms. Pac-man (all versions)
Jr. Pac-man (2600)
Moon Patroll (mostly 2600, but arcade version later on)
Kangaroo (2600)
Mario Bros (2600)
Asteroids (2600)
Burger Time (arcade)
Robotron 2084 (arcade)
Sinistar (arcade)
Zoo Keeper (arcade)
Spiderdroid (2600), I'm aware this one is a rip-off of Amidar on that console, but I didnt have Amidar, I had this one
Congo Bongo (2600)
Stargate (2600)
Enduro (2600)
Buck Rogers (2600)
Swordquest Earthworld (2600)
Solaris (2600)
Dig Dug (all versions)
Space Jockey (2600)
E.T. (2600) Yes, this fits in my favorites list. It's not actually a bad game. The problem: Most people had not the foggiest damn clue how to play it... I mean, talk about cryptic. But I actually knew how it worked and what to do.

I've always wanted to try this one.

But this is one of the few arcade games where no ROM exists in my giant archive. Which seems to only go back to 1975.

Cant try Computer Space either.

I once played a Space Invaders look a like (don't know the actual title) on a classmate's Amiga, and a few times I played River Patrol on Amiga 32 bit. I liked them but the games I was truly into were the small electronic games that consisted of only one game. I had a football (soccer) version, a baseball game and my favorite, a racing game (the kind where you have 3 lanes and move between the cars to avoid crashing).
I like Tetris, Pong, Frogger and Pac-Man, but I only got to play them once I got my Gameboy in 1990.

I like a lot of games that are older than the NES, but these are the games that were my favorite before we bought our first NES, in...maybe 1989?

We had an Atari 2600, and some Pong clone that we rarely played.

Adventure, ET, Berzerk, Pitfall!, Coleco Carnival, Seaquest, Star Raiders, Ghost Manor, Outlaw, Q*bert, Vanguard, Pitfall! II, Frogger 2, California Games...

Also really liked Ms. Pac-Man, but I'm pretty sure we got that after the NES. And Dig-Dug.

I feel like there were probably a few more games that my uncle let us borrow that I'm forgetting about...

Oh! Keystone Kapers!!

One of the saddest days of my young life was when my father accidently destroyed Save New York for the Commodore 64. I haven't touched one since. My other pre-1985 favourite was Galaxian for the Atari 2600. I once managed to make it to level 16 while in Kindergarten, a feat I will never be able to duplicate!

We have that, but I know we got it way after the NES. They had a huge box of brand new 2600 games at a dollar store back in the day O_O Man...if I could go back there...

We got Pole Position, Dig Dug, Galaxian, Venture...and...maybe one or two others?

I used to be really into this period of gaming at one time, and in fact for a number of years Mattel's Intellivision console was a special interest of mine. While it was before my time, I do remember my dad owning a few Intellivision systems that he had acquired at auctions and garage sales, and we had a whole crapload of games for it, many of which even included the original boxes, manuals, and controller overlays! I also liked Atari 2600 stuff, though I've never owned or played a real VCS, just emulators, remakes, compilations, and those plug 'n play systems. I've also played a fair number of late 70s/early 80s arcade games, again mostly through emulators and remakes and such, but a few have been on real hardware too! :) I'm also somewhat familiar with early IBM PC games and Apple II stuff, the latter of which I used to collect a bit of in physical form(!), although I've lost all of my old A2 disks and much of my hardware over the years. :(

Anyway, enough rambling, here's a brief list of my favorite pre-NES (though not necessarily pre-Famicom, as that system launched in 1983 ;)) video games:

- Joust
- Robotron: 2084
- Tetris
- Warlords (not to be confused with the later TBS/RTS series)
- Tempest
- Galaxian/Galaga
- Pac Man/Ms. Pac Man
- Pong (surprising, but physics and analog controls add a lot to this)
- Star Wars (Atari's arcade wireframe-based rail shooter, quite remarkable for its time)
- Tron
- Discs of Tron
- Astrosmash (NOT to be confused with Asteroids; this difference actually stumped me for several years as a kid :P)
- Missile Command
- Battlezone
- Space Invaders
- Q*Bert
- Dig Dug
- Defender/Stargate

I'd be tempted to put Breakout/Super Breakout on this list, except that I actually like Arkanoid and its ilk much better, and Arkanoid wasn't out until either 85 or 86. IMO, it really introduced what we call "Breakout-style" gameplay nowadays, with powerups and different block types. It's too bad I don't have much experience with RPG or strategy games of this timeframe, because I'd probably put some of those down if I did.
