Too gutted to post a lengthy tribute here, but let's just say the man was an iconic innovator who probably shaped my taste in music more than anyone else other than John Peel (what with his advocacy of Iggy Pop, Lou Reed et al, both of whose careers might well have dropped off the radar if it weren't for his patronage.

This is to say nothing of all the classic records he released himself. This is no time to bicker over which ones were great and which ones weren't, but I'll nominate "The Man Who Sold the World", "Hunky Dory" and "Low" as my top three. Almost as importantly, he taught me at quite a young age that if you don't like who you are, you can re-invent yourself and change by absorbing the influence of those whom you'd like to be like - which was a useful lesson for an undiagnosed and socially confused aspie teenager to learn.

Well there goes the third... Weiland, Lemmy, now David Bowie.

Never liked his music but I know it was highly influential to many of the things I do like, and many different things I do not. For that sphere of influence respect.

What genre of music in the last 45 years did he not influence?

Erm ... pub rock?

In all seriousness, that's probably the only one he didn't influence, at least indirectly. He also had a knack for keeping pace with what was happening outside of mainstream pop music and helping to bring performers that had previously had a strictly fringe appeal to a broader audience.

Read he died yesterday, I had to do a double take and check to make sure it wasn't a "fake" death. Sucks :( May gods love be with you Major Bowie.

Was devastated when I saw the news this morning, and I've been plunged into sadness all day.

This is indeed a sad day. RIP Goblin King. You'll be missed.

I think we’ve just lost a real space oddity and amazing singer with Ziggy stardust influence and why lose his music after he’s gone?
Let the legend that was Bowie live on.. and on.

The last one is becoz yes, he really was this sexy.

I’ve just found a few more that weren’t deleted. Here's more of my faves and also the Imagine tribute feels like voodoo considering I’m paying a tribute to him and here he is, paying his own to John Lennon..

All eccentric artists rule. Including the tributers! R.I.P
