Here's a debate that's been going on since this meal was invented a century ago. Is a hot dog a sandwich?
---
My take: Yes. It may not be a sandwich in the conventional way, but it's covered in bread, so my answer is yes.

IMHO it is a subset of sandwich types, a roll-over sandwich if you will. I miss them. :|

Technically it is a sandwich (I think. I'm not a sandwich expert). But not really a conventional one. And only if it's on a bun or bread of some sort. Otherwise it's more like a sausage.

I read somewhere that they didn't use to put hot dogs in buns when selling them on the street a long time ago, instead they would let the buyer use gloves so they could eat it without burning their fingers. The problem was they were supposed to return the gloves afterwards and they didn't always do it, so an edible "glove" was made for hot dogs.

So if it is a sandwich, it wasn't that way intentionally. Anyway this is making me hungry...

The sausage itself (an American hybrid of the sausages brought over by German speaking immigrants from Frankfurt, and the sausages brought over by other German speakers from Vienna) is not itself a sandwich.

But when served the American way ( hot, and inside of bread bun) then that sausage/bread combo also known as a "hot dog" is indeed a "sandwich".

Like the above poster said the bun was invented because customers wouldnt return the white gloves that the original vender gave out to eat them.

So based upon the assumption that you mean the sausage/bun combo (and not just the sausage) then I voted "yes" that it is a "sandwich".

It depends on how it is served. If it is served in a bun, it's a sandwich. But if it's served by itself of cut up, then it's not.

I used to like an extra-thick preparation of pork n'beans n'franks in a hot dog bun.

Its kind of a mini hero-submarine sandwich. Hot dogs are rarely NOT served on buns these days.

There used to be this great blog called "Sandwich Monday" run by the NPR team that makes the show Wait Wait Don't Tell Me; check it out. In their opinion, a hot dog is a sandwich if it's served in any starchy covering (bun, cornmeal, &c).

if they made healthy dogs in gluten-free low-glycemic-index buns, I'd eat the hell outta 'em. :chef:

I hot dog is a sandwich, because it's between two halves of a bun and you put whatever you want on it.
