Noise cancelling headphones

Well, I don't have any direct experience with other forms of hearing protection save earplugs, which are more subtle, but less effective than the headphones. That said, I did a little hunting and found a few pairs that are made by the same company and appear to meet largely similar noise reduction specs as mine. I get a little self-conscious about the bright yellow sometimes too!

I'm very sensitive to sound and I have a form of synesthsia where I feel sound like touch in and on my body which can be very uncomfortable. I've tried noise cancelling headphones but I found that they only work really well with steady noises - like traffic or aircraft noise - not with variable sound like someone hvaing a meltdown or a child screaming their head off. Instead I now use an MP3 player with Creative's EP-630 Noise Isolating Earphones. In noisy situations I can either just put the earphones in which really helps - they have three sizes of earpiece and you can choose which one works best for you, or, if it's a really loud situation (like when my neighbours put up a bouncy castle under the bedroom window of my flat with kids screaming the whole day, adults laughing and shouting and music playing loudly) I put the earphones in a play a brown noise track over the top (or a track of natural sounds like a waterfall or rain or waves on the beach). In that way I can block out any sound completely which is what I need. The noise tracks are really calming too and you can pick which kind of sound is most helpful for you.

(I chose this one because it's got 8GB of storage and takes a card so I can put all my audiobooks on it as well as managing noisy situations.)

I have some radio earmuffs, and they work quite well.

I know this is an older thread but I've had a recent discovery. I never had noise-cancelling headphones before but I do now. And WOW what a difference they make!

So I move to this big apartment building with construction nearby and barking dogs and children running and screaming up and down the stairs and a neighbor with tile floors and dress shoes overhead and a next-door neighbor who communicates in screeches. I promise I am not exaggerating.

This environment is challenging when I am indoors all day long trying to write for a living.

I tried in-ear phones. Meh. I tried on-ear phones. Better. I also have a pair of Howard Leight earmuffs for when I use power tools, but they clamp too hard for comfort.And of course, I sleep with foam ear plugs.

But Bose, Sony, Sennheiser--out of my price range. From here to Neptune. Not happening.

I found the Jabra Vega over-ear phones with active noise cancellation for half price. OMG. So.much.better.

No, they aren't cordless. Who cares--the noise cancelling works without the cord. And it's powered by a AAA battery so I never need to wait for a recharge.

Seriously, the little sound clip Jabra has on their page about the Vega headphones is accurate. Yes, there is a tiny amount of white noise, but it's low-pitched and very slight. And it's only noticeable if the room is very quiet and I'm not listening to music.
