Those poor birds. :( Penguins are my favorite birds ever, and I hate to see them die off because an iceberg is in the way, making food more difficult to get. This is really sad.

That is really sad. I hope they find a way to force it back out to sea. :(

150,000! That is really sad. I really hope people help them.

I love penguins too. I never thought that this kind of disaster would affect them.

It's very sad. I doubt anyone can do anything about it. It's a huge iceberg, and there are now only 10,000 estimated to be left in the area. If they were going to do something, it would have been done years ago.

And many times they will not interfere with nature unless it's important for the survival of the species or ecosystem.

"Instead of being close to the water, the penguins now have to walk 40 miles in order to hunt for food. "

"...the dramatic decline in their numbers can be directly attributed to the iceberg, as another colony just five miles away is "thriving."

Anyone else find that a bit confusing?

Five miles vs forty miles?

None of the articles on the web has a map.

I guess the beleaguered penguins are like the port of Baltimore: at the head of a long bay like the Chesapeake. And they used to access the open ocean via swimming the length of that bay. But now the bay is blocked so they all have to waddle over land to get to the open ocean.

The five mile away "thriving colony" might be at some point on the coast that's over a mountain ridge that the beleaguered penguins cant march over.

Also penguin colonies probably dont tolerate foreign penguins marching through their territory anyway (kinda like Americans are loath to take in Syrian refugees).

Thank you, I hadn't thought of it in that sort of way.

Wow, that IS really sad. I was gonna say: *Well, since they can't move the iceberg, why don't they move the penguins?* The comment by NaturalPlastic, about that the other penguins probably wouldn't like it, makes sense, though.

If they had thought of it in time to save the penguins some rich oil sheik from the Persian Gulf could have paid to have the iceberg towed north. They could stick sails on it. When they reach the tip of Africa they could catch the Monsoon winds to sail the ice berg (which is more than half of the size of the District of Columbia) up into the Persian Gulf. There would be enough unmelted ice left after even that long journey to use it as a reservoir of fresh water for the desert kingdoms of the area. And it would have saved the Penguins.

Possible good news!

Some biologists say that normally there would have been carcasses found so perhaps they really *did* just leave!

That is good news! I'm just glad they're okay and find food elsewhere.
