I don't seem to be able to make even a half-decent joke. They are not racist, sexist, ableist, etc. I tried to make a joke today, but it just came off as mean and unfunny. In hindsight I don't even get what I was trying to do.

How would I go about developing a sense of humor?

Should I just try not to make jokes anymore?

I like the Seinfield approach.
The closer to you and your heart the funnier it will be.

It's very risky.

Also knowing your audience is crucial. Repeating things from a video , movie or TV, can be gold or get folks to back away.

Back in the 80's I went the open mike route.
Rejection in comedy is part of the learning curve.
So is writing.
That and voices got me radio work for a while.
One lesson I learned
When I don't try so hard
the comedy works at a higher percentage. :o

to go about this in an autistic manner I would recommend buying a massive joke book and reading it cover-to-cover. That helped me :)

If I ever think of a joke or pun that I like then I will (almost unconsciously at this point) start rehearsing telling it a few times in my mind and memorizing it. I have a rather large library of jokes to tell, and I can reuse them as long as I'm careful to not use it on the same person twice. I also read funny comics, listen to comedians, look up memes, look up jokes, and stuff like that to give me ideas. In a conversation I can usually make some good jokes every now and again, especially if I am comfortable and not too anxious. It really does help give me some much needed charisma sometimes.
