I want to be able to experiment in an optical lab. What I mean by that is examine different types of lenses and create my own for different purposes. I searched for a job at an optical lab, but I couldn't find any in my area. I'm thinking that I might be able to do this at the engineering department at my local university. I'm just not sure they'd allow non-engineering students to do anything with the lab.

Mention that you're going for your BSc in your profile.

It's not really nerdy to be going to University, if you're worried about that.
