And I say this as someone who took math classes in my '30s. And I also taught one year of high school math, specifically 9th grade algebra and 10th grade geometry.

You can first learn the theory and then the procedure. This is viewed as the 'normal' way.

Or, you can first learn the procedure and then the theory. This is perhaps more of the right-brain, pattern recognition, feel-and-texture method.
