As inflation devastates Venezuela, artists make purses and paintings out of bills

Economic crises like Venezuela's upturn lives – but that doesn't mean creativity disappears. Some Venezuelan artists are making a point, and art, out of the country's now near-worthless currency.

Inflation has been a challenge in Venezuela for years, but over the past 12 months, the bolívar has become more valuable as an art and craft material than in the bank. Just look at Jesús Campos, who can sell a purse crafted out of hundreds of folded bolívar bills for about $10 – when the notes alone wouldn’t have been enough for a cup of coffee. Another artist in Venezuela is using the currency as his canvas and selling his painted bolívares online. The government has acknowledged money isn’t stretching as far anymore – but President Nicolás Maduro places the blame on “mafias” trying to take down Venezuela’s socialist movement. He’s vowed to slash some of the zeros off of prices – and wages – by June. Few economists see that as an effective solution. “We might be able to count prices easier,” says one Caracas-based economist of the government’s plans. “But if inflation continues at the same rate, those new bills will soon become useless.”

There are Capitalist dictatorships. South Korea under Park Chung-hee or Chile under Pinochet are examples.

People act like the failings of Venezuela is all due to internal policy. However, most of it is from the crippling sanctions, penalties, embargoes, and petro-political meddling that are all imposed by foreign powers to economically sabotage the country.

Marx's teleological universe imagined that capitalist societies would inevitable collapse and bring on universal socialism. He had the "collapse" part right, but he had the two systems backwards: socialism is always the one that collapses in a storm of poverty and death.

IN VENEZUELA, THE END IS NEAR

We have chronicled the accelerating destruction of Venezuela, once one of the world’s more prosperous countries, by socialism. The most recent news from that country is chilling:

* According to Gallup, Venezuela is now the least safe place the world, having tumbled below Afghanistan in the rankings. Only 17% of Venezuelans say they feel safe walking alone at night.

* Polio has re-emerged in Venezuela, 30 years after it was declared extinct there. The country’s health care system is verging on non-existent, as hospitals not only have run out of medicines, in some instances they don’t even have running water.

* Venezuela is said to have more proven oil reserves than any other country, but its socialist government can’t keep the petroleum flowing, as pretty much everyone who is competent enough to do so has left the country. As a result, Venezuela’s oil exports are heading toward zero.

* Having frustrated the creation of wealth, Venezuela’s socialists have done what they thought was the next best thing–they created a lot of currency. With an inflation rate now at 24,600%, that currency is essentially worthless. So scavenging for food in dumpsters is more profitable than working for useless bolivars.

* How can Venezuela’s socialist government possibly stay in power in the midst of such disaster? The headlines give us a clue: Accounts of brutal torture further isolate Venezuela.

under capitalism, if you have no financial worth, you have no roof over your head or anything else. under socialism there are at least a few crumbs thrown towards those of us not financially talented.

Substance Level = Zero

These kinds of wealth gaps occur in capitalist societies as well.

Late-stage socialism, before the inevitable collapse, when the only consideration left is who has the guns.

The Army Took Over the Spigots, Forcing Thirsty Venezuelans to Pay

(Bloomberg) -- To arrive at the El Paraiso water-filling station in Caracas by sunrise, Rigoberto Sanchez wakes before 4 a.m. Hours later, his tanker is in a slow-moving line with a dozen others. Only two of the 10 pumps work and Sanchez will have time for a couple of deliveries if he’s lucky. If he’s luckier, the military won’t intercept him.

“They hijack our trucks, just like that,” said Sanchez, leaning on a rusty railing. “Once that happens, you’re in their hands, you have to drive the truck wherever they want you to.”’

Venezuela’s military has come to oversee the desperate and lucrative water trade as reservoirs empty, broken pipes flood neighborhoods and overwhelmed personnel walk out. Seven major access points in the capital of 5.5 million people are now run by soldiers or police, who also took total control of all public and private water trucks. Unofficially, soldiers direct where drivers deliver — and make them give away the goods at favored addresses.

Libertarian Socialism is an oxymoron.

I live in a socialist country and it is very gentle. The states never were, I might be on the streets if I'd stayed, but instead I am receiving counseling and autism education, I'm doing volunteer work and I'll be getting an education soon so I can live a more useful existence and not feel crappy about myself.

I believe Socialism won't work in America though just like Communism didn't work lots of places, although there are some pretty successful communist parts of Switzerland which are peaceful and gentle on a scale that is hard to wrap my brain around. You can't implement every political philosophy in every culture at every scale. one size does not fit all.
