I think this gold half-eagle was one of the most striking designs the US ever produced. It's also one of the few (the only?) incuse (intaglio) designs ever used. Some people objected to that, claiming that dirt would accumulate in the grooves and make the coin unsanitary.

The quarter eagle has the same design. I wonder how wear is graded on those.

It's strange to see the fraction actually written out at 2 1/2 on the coin. I was trying to think if we've had any other US coins with a "vulgar fraction" like that, and I can't come up with any.

And I've had two of these now.

my brother would love the first one!! ! he is a huge fan of Isaac Newton, he really really admires him since childhood. the way I was obsessed with Helen Keller. that would make a great gift for him actually but he would lose it. it's beautiful

They are in circulation here and worth C$1.41. I live only 20 mins from Grantham, Newton's hometown. I've visited his childhood home a few times, with apple tree, only they aren't sure which apple tree is THE apple tree, there's four I think. It's all in period and very interesting.

I have copies of those cut from BEP souvenir cards. Both the obverse and reverse of each note. They were printed from the original plates onto heavy stock and I can actually feel the texture of the engraving.
