I regularly shock people with how powerful and precise my long-term memory can be, but my short-term memory is really wobbly and seems to be getting worse. Maybe it's my meds. I don't know. We're supposed to have all kind of "executive function deficits," and I definitely do, I've just had more reason to question memory lately.

My short term memory is there and it isn't.

Like for something totally minute, like what medication someone was prescribed and the dosage (which has proven to be useful down the road), i'll remember it to the detail 10 minutes later and for years. But if I try to remember something like a phone number, I have a hard time remembering it 5 minutes later.

It's kind of hard to explain.

I'm like the OP. Most people's earliest memory is at 7 and mine is at 2.5! 8O

But my shorterm memory is pretty awful.

Do most people really not remember that far back?

There was a time, probably, that my memory went that far back but my head is so full of minute details and song lyrics from the 80's-90's now that there's probably not much left . Like I still have the exact map of my elementary school (14-15 years ago) in my head somewhere but heaven forbid I remember something meaningful like a birthday from around that time.

Mine is pretty bad, part of that is my own fault I guess because of drugs but maybe I always been this way and now I just perceive that's the cause I don't know.

I've always hated that, caused me so much unneeded anxiety. I like that my current place has two doors so there really is no way I can forget to lock both.

Short term memory or working memory? My working memory is pretty bad, but has actually gotten better with antipsychotic meds (which is the main reason I keep taking them). It is an executive function thing.

Working memory helps consolidate short term memory, but the two are distinct processes that occur in different regions of the brain.

I wait tables and I memorize all my orders. I have color coded symbols that I memorize that correspond with the menu. However, I can have trouble remembering what I ate for breakfast or if I get distracted I can forget what it was I was in the middle of.

Pepole find it odd that I can remember particular lines of what they said, word for word, in a casual conversation years ago, so they apparently do not remember such.

On the other hand, I have very bad memory of recent stuff, and I have forgotten most of the older stuff too.
