Hi I am a cashier at the Home Depot and let me just say that I often find my dealings with the public. I feel desperately lonely because I feel like the only one who really struggles the way I do when everyone else takes most of social contact and customer service for granted. I make very little eye contact and when someone tries to say hi if they remember me I get nervous and embarrassed. Im finding dealing with customers very stressful and overwhelming. People must think I am crazy I often get so shook up that I lose concentration and space out
I want to know how I can be friendly yet not too personal at the same time with people. The balance of being friendly and keeping it professional.
Also I have been at this job for a little over a year and I hardly know any of my coworkers. I would like to feel more comfortable with people and them more comfortable with me (I really work with a great group of people). For a long time I cant seem to get myself to trust anyone.
If any one understands this please let the word out. Sometimes I feel like I cant handle baring all the pain and stress at this job anymore
Thanks

I worked as a cashier at a grocery store for quite some time. I felt exactly the same way- EXACTLY. It got to the point where I felt so nervous I was nauseated and had stomach cramps for an entire day or two before work. At that point, I just quit.

There are jobs out there that are more appropriate for Aspies. I'm sure you can find something better! Can you?

I used to love working as a cashier.
Besides having it off with the till, it is a good way to meet punters.
I remember people used to ask, " have you got any Marlborough?". I would turn around, look at the cigarettes, look back at the customer and say, "yeah, sure we do." I knew they wanted a box of cigs, i just liked taking the piss.

I met a cashier at a grocery store once and I really liked her! She was very sweet!

However, I asked her sister if her phone book listing was old, and now she won't even speak to me!

My very first job was as a cashier in a pharmacy. What helped me in knowing what to say to customers was visiting other shops while I was in the queue listening to what the cashiers there said to their customers. Once you've been in a queue for a couple of minutes, you hear the most commonly used phrases. Also, if you go into a few different shop you can build up a range of phrases that you feel comfortable to use as polite socialising with customers.

Not sure what kind of movies you're interested in, if at all...

Try these two: "Clerks" (The first one -- black and white), and "10 items or less".

You might identify...

I was a cashier (A long............ time ago). Didn't like it much... Had to bust a shop-lifter once too... creep...

Welcome to the "playpen"... ! !! !

When I went to a Juniour college, I was studying audio/video production and photography. I got a job at the college as the school photographer. The job also entailed maintianing the adio/video studio, which I completely rewired and reconfigured into a working studio. The pay was crap. The hours were crap. The people were AMAZING! Best job ever! Ask a counselor if there are campus jobs available. You won't regret it!

I was once a salesperson at Sears for tools and lawn and garden, but we had to do our own cashiering or be cashier when no cashier was around. And yeah, I didn't like to touch the people's hands, and I couldn't make small chit chat. And unfortunately I think I would do certain things like maybe so a weird spin when I thought no one was looking and then I would notice that I wasn't alone so I think they thought I was really nutty. Or something. But I hated getting hit on. Made me want to have a heart attack. And the sad part it was mostly old men. Once an eighty year old man or something was following me really closely and I turned around to ask him if he needed any help and he just said "Enjoying the view" I wanted to go home right there or just hide in this tool cage in the back. And once my manager saw me chase a squirrel in the parking lot, I don't think that changed my standing for the positive.
