Boy With Autism Attacked After Photographing Couple in Newport Beach

Quote:
The mother of a teenage boy with autism says a couple who attacked her son after he took photographs of them wouldn't stop even when she told them about his disability.

A disability does not you give you the right to violate other peoples right to privacy, I would be pretty pissed too.

An adult assaulted a child.

Blaming the victim for the assault is unacceptable.

I said I would be pretty pissed in their shoes, I didn't say I would attack him or that they were justified in their actions.

16 is not a child. I'm not saying the response was appropriate, but it's not helpful to distort the reality of the situation either.

The laws vary by locale but the couple was walking on a public sidewalk.

Doesn't mean most people are going to appreciate being filmed in public, legal or not. I know I would be, at the least, weirded out by someone photographing me on the street, though I most likely wouldn't physically attack over it.

I agree. I would be PO'd too, and 16 is not a 'child' other than in a legal sense. He was invading their privacy and according to the article he snapped several pictures of them. I understand very well that they got angry. While they could have handled it less aggressively, it's my opinion that his parents should not have started talking about what he has, they should have made him delete the images or done so themselves.
If he doesn't understand that on his own, then maybe they need to keep an eye on him more. Despite the selfie culture that has developed, there are still plenty of people who prefer to avoid being photographed by anyone, let alone a stranger.

Taking pictures of people without their permission is totally unacceptable. It is a violation of privacy. Does his mother think that a disability gives him the right to ignore basic societal expectations?
Getting a bit roughed up for taking these pictures might do him some good, because his mother is certainly not teaching him well. And frankly, the consequences could have been a lot worse.

I get pictures without permission is annoying but everytime you walk outside in public locations you are subject to and often are surveilled by security and other camaras without your permission. How many of you have watched "funny" Youtube videos that went viral and humiliated people without thier permission?

I wish we could go back to 1970's levels and expectations of privacy. Seriously doubt it is going to happen. People at one time had a chance to stop it but chose convenience and security. Enjoy your autistic friendly google glasses.

While I don't agree with what the couple did----I mean, they opened the car door to get at the kid (that's private property----you can't just go in someone's car, like that)----I DO agree with those, here, that say he should've been taught better, and that disability is NO excuse!!

A 16 year old is a child Under UK law and this also classes as a hate crime.

So did he intentionally snap a photo of them or were they just happening to be walking by when he snapped as photo?

If it was intentional, the kid needs to be told he cannot take photos of people without their permission or otherwise it can get people upset and that incident can happen again or take his phone or ipad and smash it on the ground.
