I take a seam ripper to the stitches holding on the label, and it removes it better than cutting or ripping out the labels. Fortunately now you can find clothes that are completely tagless, so I have a lot of those items. The underwear I prefer is the tagless variety because I found those labels to be even more annoying.

I try to remove them completely with small scissors (if it needs sewing, I ask a family member - I am completely helpless at sewing, even though I had to do it at school.... now that was a nightmare), if I cut them off, the remainder that's sewn into the fabric continues to irritate me. And I'd prefer not to destroy my clothes by simply ripping the tags out.
