I often repeat words or phrases out loud for hours before I can stop. I don't know why I do it but I'm the only person I know of that does it.

My most recent word (a few days ago) was "scythes".

Anyone else do this?

Yes, it's a form of echolalia, and quite common even among the "higher functioning" on the spectrum. I repeat words and phrases to myself all the time, sometimes because I like how they sound, sometimes because it's entertaining (I recite dialogue from movies to myself, and it's like playing the film in my head) and sometimes because it's comforting. The repeated words act like an anchor for me to hold onto in unfamiliar or anxiety-inducing situations.

Yup. Things can catch in my brain for days, weeks, or even years in a few cases.

Only to myself. And, not that much, but I get stuck on words sometimes. And, I have a few phrases that just come out of me sometimes. And I have no idea why.

I used to have this problem big-time. I would often say them very loudly, and my parents would ask me to quiet down. I always attributed that more to Tourette's than Asperger's, though.

I have this stim also. One thing that I do often is I'll say a sentence, then whisper the last word of the sentence to myself a few times.

I usually only talk aloud to myself when I'm trying to remember something or speaking a word with a foreign accent.

Ugh, I do this too. But I've managed to keep a lid on it so as to only say it over and over in my own head, or out loud only when alone. But sometimes yes, it's a word or usually a phrase, just repeat repeat repeat.

Happens when I'm talking to myself and I... and I... and I... and I... and I... and I... X 50 will repeat myself like that.

D you think its echolalia if you repeat a word or sound just once.

I have done that. But, the body goes on as if there is no hiccup. For instance, there were times when I was coding. I would continue to type the code properly, but the brain would loop on a piece or something.

I do this too, usually with names and I repeat the words quietly. I guess echolalia is a form of stimming.

Yes, if I'm anxious I will repeat a word or phrase I've just said over and over. It's like getting stuck in a loop. Sometimes I have a tendency to say things quite loud as well. I just nearly shouted a word from a sentence that was supposed to stay inside my head. Followed by "don't shout don't shout don't shout don't shout don't shout". I was thinking about something that worried me.

Hmm... that sounds kinda messed up written down
