why do humans see themselves as different from animals?

While humans are scientifically classified as animals, we frequently see ourselves as being something different from the animals. Why is this?

How do animals see themselves?

Have you ever seen any other animal than a human animal perform heart surgery or a lung transplant or building a rocket ship and fly up to an international space station that their species made?

We are quite a bit different.

Mainly, because humans are created in God's image, and animals are not.

Because for the most part, everyone knows that 'I am unique.'
I'm not an animal, I'm a human, therefore humans are not animals.

Some can see past that, it's true, since every human is unique.

Partly this, any animal that has a sufficiently complex language will probably run into some variety of perceived exceptionalism in its experience of self.

Also, as far as we know, we have this most acutely because - at least as far as organic life on this planet is concerned - we are at the top with respect to subjective, linguistic, and intellectual complexity.
