why did we pronounce the year 2001 as "two thousand one" and not "twenty oh one"?

I pronounce it "two thousand and one".

As a rule, do Americans not add the "and"?
I've noticed this in the count in words thread too.

Why is how we say it such a big deal, I seem to switch how I say the year a lot.

"Twenty oh one" just sounds weird.

Don't particularly like being reminded of that year anyway, had major surgery, behavioral issues at my special school due to bullying and isolation from the other kids who were a year older than me, and of course a little something in September wasn't too pleasant either. At least I got Pokémon Gold which I believe is still the greatest Pokémon game ever :)
