I prefer forums as well, I really miss roleplaying/anime forums, and it's a personal goal of mine to found my own whenever I get better at programming. Forums are a nomenclature of an age long past, a large contributor of their overall appeal. Simplistic, straightforward websites such as discussion based forums are becoming few and far in between, despite their accessibility and ease of access. Most older people will prefer forums due to their classic designs, and a heightened sense of anonymity which isn't really available in the new age of social media. Unless you frequent the 'chans. Still, I wish forums would make a comeback, there's a cordial and upfront nature found in board-based discussions that interactions on big-name sites are lacking. Gaia Online used to be my forum of choice, if any of you remember that. One of these days, I'll start working on my own site, probably a chatroom and a forum where people can discuss storytelling, retro video games, modern video games, anime, books, etc, and have the chatroom designed around roleplaying, because it's something I really miss. One of these days...

A comeback? I didn’t know they’d ever gone away.

A comeback meaning that Internet forum models would play a larger niche, yet limited general purpose roles in the Internet ecosystem; instead of the present tiny niches roles of Internet forums.

Internet Forums might best function if diversity, and usage needs information broken down to a dozen or so classifications i.e., Business news, Science news, TECH. News, Health & Medical News, and Misc. news topics e.g., foods, travel.

At the same time, it might be best to limit general news coverage; as well known general news topics might render Internet Forums too cumbersome to analyze!

I've found that discussion forums offer a much more in-deptch discussion than things like facebook groups, where the discussion is fragmented and not very lengthy.

I agree. Also, it's hard to find a topic or thread in a Facebook group, if you come back a few days later. And maybe the thread you were looking for was a sub-thread etc.

I much prefer forums but still use Facebook and Twitter. Facebook mostly for the social aspect (easier there than in real life).

I rarely ever venture onto Facebook these days but could easily spend all day reading forums. I'd be really disappointed if they did die out. I'm more interested in information than socialising though, plus social media is quite overwhelming.

Hopefully there are enough people who feel this way to keep forums alive!

Thank-you Alex for your response to this discussion topic. Thank-you everybody for your feedback.

Internet Forums might also best function as a read-only format - which can serve to keep Internet forums from appearing as too cumbersome to readers.

A read-only format would provide number of views/reads data; that is statistical data important in the current Internet/social media ecosystem.

Hence, a read-only forum model broken down to dozen or so classifications i.e., Business news, Science news, TECH. News, Health & Medical News, Misc., etc. would also provide statistical data ripe for analysis; and hence opportunities to glean valuable (often overlooked) trend insights!

I'm glad that internet forums are "dying" ... because they aren't actually dying. All of the normies are leaving. That's all.

Web 2.0 sites like Facebook are full of normie crap about celebrity gossip, sports, ect. The only people left on the web 1.0 forums are "weird" people who talk about stuff that is anti-establishment.

For example, this site contains people who discuss esoteric stuff such as third world politics and the history of anarchist thought. Meanwhile, web 2.0 sites are full of simple-minded Republican Vs. Democrat slapfights.

I'm glad that the normies are gone. Good riddance.

Precisely.

The normies on the web 2.0 sites want everything to be as simple as a bumper sticker.

People who still use web 1.0 forums accept that reality is complex, and embrace that wholeheartedly.

A read-only format can serve to keep Internet forums from becoming too cumbersome to readers.

In today's busy world, a read-only format alone with number of views/reads data would provide valuable data in the current Internet/social media ecosystem. Hence, the traditional notion of an 'Internet forum' becomes less important.

A heavily used read-only forum broken down to dozen or so classifications i.e., Business news, Science news, TECH. News, Health & Medical News, Misc., etc. with number of views/reads data can provide (often overlooked, sometimes astounding) trend insights!

With social media going out of fashion, it's possible that they could. I think they died originally because people discovered Facebook and would rather talk to their friends and their friends' friends than completely random strangers but people are bored of social media now and a lot of people find it depressing. Plus it's just not as cool. Maybe people just don't want to socialise so much over the internet anymore now though, it's not a new fascinating concept anymore that you can talk to somebody half the world away as if they were sitting next to you. We kind of take it for granted now.

I couldn't say whether or not could.

But 100%, no doubt, they should.

With the speed that information flows, automated, or automated support (that keeps humans in the loop) classification system (driven by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms) needs reconsideration.

Just how much can an (AI) classification algorithm classify content in the correct categories e.g., a dozen or so (fairly basic) classifications i.e., Business news, Science news, TECH. News, Health & Medical News, Misc., etc.?

I hope forums make a comeback, but I'm not holding my breath.

Society is too ADHD these days to actually sit down, -look- for interesting content, and type more than a sentence or two. They would rather scroll through Imgur or a Facebook wall full of unfunny memes and videos, all chosen for them by a series of algorithms, knowing that if they scroll long enough, eventually they'll find something funny enough to make it worth it. Rinse and repeat.

It's not a sharing of ideas, it's a popularity contest, and something to distract them while they're working or watching TV.

I wasn’t aware internet forums are considered out of date.

What has replaced them?
