How does curly hair grow?

Ok, I admit that I'm a guy. But when I grew my hair slightly out before, it has been shown to grow out kind of curly. If I grew it out to at least a shoulder length say, would the top stay curly or would only the ends be curly? I don't mind the curly looks though.
