If they didnt have nukes they could keep their nutty regime. No one would pull them into a costly war

Interesting that listed below this post in "Similar Topics" is:

NK is a FAILED STATE and they are causing Major instability in the region by threatning Japan which in turn is fomenting a Chinese-Japanese conflict. They have broken promises about their nuclear weapons program, are preparing for a missile test, AND worst of all they have cut off diplomatic relations with South Korea and are preparing for War. WHO is going to stop them if we dont take Military Action? NK is not anywhere close to being a military equal with the US and furthermore, we most definitely could win a war with them. Lastly, the country is so beligerant that they have lost the support of their traditional allies China and Russia.

Let's see, 2017 - 2009 = 8, this crap has been brewing for at least 8 years now.

The impression I get is that Un does it to extort food aid from the west. That so his people dont starve, and dont over throw him (or just cause the whole nation to unravel into a failed state). Its out of desperation.

But yes-it is a paradox. From his pov nukes get him attention. But the bad news is that from his pov nukes get him attention. Saddam Hussein bluffed that he had nukes to get the US to back off, but it backfired and his alledged nukes became an excuse for Bush to invade him.

My fantasy: China, the US, and its allies (South Korea, and Japan), all have a big summit. They all agree to following plan: buy off the current dictator of north korea ( agree to give him a retirement palace on the French Riviera) in return for him handing over the car keys to driving his country (he would be given full legal immunity no matter how many human rights violations that they uncover that he may have done to his own people, or to anyone else). And then have an international commission run north korea for the transitional time period. Kinda like the Marshal Plan.

Because men of the Kim dynasty think nuclear weapons make them the Long Dong Silver or John Holmes of the world stage.

I imagine the the gamble is that the nuclear weapons would stop anybody from messing with them, Saddam had a million man army that crumbled in like 2 weeks so they probably wanted some additional insurance.

This is a great question, which cuts to the quick.

Where did they come from, literally.
