I have loved horses since a child... amazing, beautiful animals. I also started riding at age 4 and did it on and off until I was 13.
Here are some pics.
The first lot were taken at 'Spirit Of The Horse' last year...hard to shoot with so much motion.
The others were taken both of a friend's horse and some horses in a field.

I used to watch racing sometimes, but I was put off by how many died on the racecourses.
I used to be majorly into Red Rum and another well known horse whose name slips my mind.
Damn, name me some other famous racehorses...

I don't think so... there were two horses that used to turn up regularly in my horse annuals as a young girl in the 80s. I am trying to ...hmm, time to research, lol.

Might have been Arkle. Steeplechase horse.

yes arkle was/is a steeplechase legend.
before the 80s though, so more likely Dessie.

I was more into the flat racing than national-hunt, it used to be my major interest about 10 years ago.
I still follow the racing, but not like i used to.

yes, there are casualities on the racecourse; not too many. But there are more casualities in training, not to mention those that don't make it or have nowhere to go when they reach retirement. It's not a cruel sport, but this is the bad-side which most betting-shop punters do not care about.

The horses in these annuals were from a long period. Seabiscuit was another.
I do remember one of the famous races made the news not long ago because of a record number of losses in terms of horses.
But yes, it used to be a Saturday thing for me, either that or the showjumping.
Never been a betting person, so never bet.
I don't really care all that much about losses in terms of the riders, lol, just the horses... I suppose because they don't get a choice in what they do.
I wonder if they get any pleasure from racing.
Anyways.. horses are just favourite animal of mine, whether a racer, jumper or just...well...a horse in a field.

Haha
the record loser you are thinking about is probably Quixall Crossett, raced about 150 times without winning. I remember it nearly winning once. :D
One of the lucky ones really, probably about 17yo now but stayed safe enough to race and cover some of his training money for most his career. I would imagine the owner is nice enough to make sure he has a good retirement too.

I don't know if they get pleasure from racing; they are pack-animals and like to run with each other. That's how you spot the good ones, they hit the front and keep going. But don't tell anyone, it's my secret.

I love horses. I tried uploading photos of my family's horses on here but ImageShack isn't working right.
Horses make me feel so happy.

I'd love to have a horse, but I don't think I could keep up with the amount of care it would require :(

I use to ride horses everyday but when I was 8 years old I pointed my horse at a jump, it ran away with me for a few minutes and I hit the ground HARD and I never really got back into it after that.
