What is the most vigorous/extreme sport or exercise that you know of?

as far as i understand it, there can be different kinds of extremeness in exercise.
for example, a weightlifter will exercise in extreme maximum strength ranges, whereas marathon or bicycle specialists train for extreme endurance. contraction speed can be another department...

from my experience, thai boxing as a whole is pretty extreme. its a full contact sport and the conditioning is pretty badass.

Although I've never done it, competitive rowing is meant to be very tiring and strenuous

Doctors used to say that running a mile in under four minutes could kill you. That was believed until a British medical student, later a neurologists, proved them wrong. Roger Bannister claimed he was "dead tired," but as the record showed, he was very much alive.

Hahaha.

I must say that doing 100 press-ups on one leg as fast as possible while going down as far as possible is PRETTY DARN HARD! I did it today.

The claim that a 4-minute mile was once thought to be impossible by informed observers was and is a widely propagated myth cooked up by sportswriters and debunked by Bannister himself in his memoir, The Four Minute Mile, 1955. The reason the myth took hold was that 4 minutes was a nice round number which was slightly better (1.4 seconds) than the world record for nine years—longer than it probably otherwise would have been because of the effect of World War II in interrupting athletic progress in the combatant countries.

Gymnastics is one of the most tough all around sports. It requires immense speed, agility, hand eye, dexterity, balance, and strength. Kids must be conditioned from a young age to compete, and if they ever quit they lose the ability and can never do it again.

Martial Arts and boxing are also two vigorous sports. They will build reflexes, stamina, speed, flexibility, striking power, etc. Moreover, they teach you how to beat someone down.

There's still downtime in that.

I like the underwater running idea, haha.
