I'd say no. There's nothing wrong with a man in the kitchen cooking dinner or a woman in the garage working on the car.

No, but if that's the way both parties want to live then there is nothing wrong with that.

Is it a sign I'm getting old that my first thought was 'great I'll be in the warm with the food'?

No. My father can cook, and so can my brother. In fact he's pretty much the designated cook in his own household. My SIL didn't even have an oven in her old house, and my stepnieces were really thin and mostly only ate junk before my brother came along. But to be honest I'd rather be in a kitchen than a garage. But it's like sometimes that women can't do "girly stuff" even if they actually do like it because it's considered inferior. Of course, if you're a professional chef in a high-quality restaurant instead of just a domestic household kitchen, then the whole gender-role thing is completely reversed. Go figure.

My mom told me yesterday that my dad is planning to make some meat pies from scratch. She doesn't want to be anywhere near the kitchen when he does, though, because he gets the flour everywhere. I normally just go out and buy frozen pie shells now.

We don't have a kitchen or a garage, so in my home both the man and the woman belong in the couch.

i think there are many more dinner-making men then there are women who rebuild carburetors, or change differential fluid.

That's true.
Where I grew up, a lot of men do both cars and cooking, and the women do only cooking. Maybe because mothers teach both girls and boys how to cook, but fathers only teach the boys about cars? At least that's how it was for me. All of my male cousins know how to work our grandpa's boats, but I wasn't allowed those lessons because I'm a girl.

I hope that's going to even out in a few generations.

I just spent all evening in the garage cleaning the interior of my car, the windows inside & out, and also installing "auto ventshades" on all 4 opening windows. Now I'm about to make something to eat. But then again, I am a gay man, sooo..

Heh. Both my parents can cook. Mom only uses their garage for storage & parking her car, my dad for tools etc.

I unsurprisingly don't believe in gender roles at all. The words "men" and "women" should have no bearing on your standards of behaviour in my view.

I say where they belong depends on what works for the couple

What? How small is your place if it has no kitchen? How do you survive? 8O

I guess I should mention my family has never had a garage. I think where I live garages are something of a luxury item.

Very densely populated area where most people live in apartment buildings?

Here, there's typically a 2 car garage built into every house/townhouse, which make up a huge % of housing stock vs. condos. Although, there are more condos than ever & people living downtown mostly don't bother with owning cars.

It's a caravan, and I have a small electrical hotplate, so I can still make a meal if I'm patient (but I mostly just eat bread). Not very fancy, but it's cheap and there's no neighbours, so I'm quite happy about it. :)
