Don't tell anyone I told you this, but if you want to play jazz you won't need such a pure tone (others may disagree). You could develop shorter, breathy, spitty tones. It's the pure long tones that are the killer. I play mostly baroque.. or at least I try to... but I'm thinking of playing some more jazz.

Never been able to play recorder... I have heard some amazing music played on these, though.

my present state of my art on day 2, is I can play the type of "jazzy" spitty tones you mentioned if I am going any faster than 1/4 notes, or full tones on longer notes. I can't get the full tone instantly, takes a few hundred milliseconds of each note. I hope i'm not one of those who ain't cut out for it, physically.

I'm sure you'll be fine. The flute is very hard physically... needs more breath than most wind instruments. I've had aching ribs after a long session.

Recorders... just never got along with the pesky things so never tried hard enough to get a decent tone. Some things you take to and some you don't, it's all in the mind, I suppose.

thank you, that is reassuring. :) I have long loved the contrabass recorders, they remind me of pipe organ pedal register.
