SECONDED!

This is one of the main things that is killing leftism - party loyalty.

Look at the big picture. Yes, Obama was better than Trump. That's hardly an achievement, given how horribly selfish Trump is.

During the Obama administration, Scandinavian people enjoyed a higher standard of living than Americans.

Don't treat Obama as a perfect saint. Understand that he could have been so much more.

Political discourse becomes stupid and lazy when people worship politicians, instead of striving for abstract moral ideals.

While I hardly consider Obama to be without fault, I genuinely liked and supported him.

I still like Bernie, but maybe someone a bit younger who's also a democratic socialist would be better. Also not sure he even would want to try running again.

Dr. Sean Benoit, Asst Professor of Surgery at Univ of Maryland MC and Medical Director at Prince George's Hospital Center in Maryland. He advocates for several social issues such as gun violence, women's rights, gay equality, etc.

He's currently married and has three sons.

<---And has a crazy brother who posts on WP every so often. :D

Well, as soon as Dr. Benoit gets on the ballot, he can be assured of my vote.

A lot more conservatives around here. But there is a growing liberal movement here, as well, considering that we have an annual pride parade and rainbow festival. In fact a few years ago, The advocate, a leading national LGBT periodical, called Spokane the 3rd most gay friendly city in America.

Interesting.

Austin and Houston are the main progressive cities in Texas. Most of the southern half of Texas is Democratic, the northern half is mostly Republican (except for Dallas and Tarrant counties). All but two of the GOP reps are pro-Trump (Kay Granger and Will Hurd are the two never-Trumpers). The one leaning most to the right is Louie Gohmert (district is in deep east Texas), the one most to the left is Sheila Jackson-Lee (district is in the middle of Houston).

You might remember Tom Foley, who used to be Speaker of the House. He was the representative of Spokane and much of eastern Washington. But because Newt Gingrich and company had sowed the seeds of term limit fever in my end of Washington state (conveniently forgetting to press for term limits in Georgia), idiots around here had voted out the Speaker of the House! We ended up with a conservative junior congressman named George Nethercutt, who forgot about his pledge to limit his time in office to just two terms, when he assumed nobody remembered that promise. The national media, so dumbstruck that anyone would vote out the next in line after the Vice President for the White House, had thought people around here must be so naive as to believe that Nethercutt would simply replace Foley as House Speaker. No, Spokanites weren't that dumb, but they were dumb enough to fall for that term limit talk without realizing it was nothing more than a right wing subterfuge to oust liberals from office.

...I don't't know who Jeff Merkley is, I'll look him up. I will say more later - and I will bring race-region-religion into our little game of fantasy football here.
I will mention that CA's Kamala Harris has been mentioned - she was a state and big-city DA and is South Asian and black. Remember, the " conventional wisdom " regarding the Dimmycrats is that " All those unemployed autoworkers sitting at the VFW bar in MI - they were alienated by Hillary Clinton 's pantsuits! " :P ! !

Jeff Merkley is a senator from Oregon. He is second only to Bernie Sanders in terms of progressiveness.

I had heard of Tom Foley, but not Nethercutt.

Given that Sanders has inspired a generation of young social idealists, that shouldn't be too difficult.

Of course, it is very very early but Bernie is leading in the polls consistently and that is something that should be noticed. Before the primaries Trump lead consistently while all the "experts" though his candidacy was a joke.

So far, Elizabeth Warren, Jay Inslee, and Kamala Harris have thrown their names in.

in a nutshell-
universal heath care ["medicare for all"]
universal college tuition
leveling income inequality/living wage
humane revision of immigration law
combating climate change
getting big money out of politics and defanging multinationals' corruption of our political system
affordable housing/tackling homelessness
