conservatism, American style, is all about profit, externalizing costs, and everything else be damned to hell. American business has a short-term mentality. conservation interferes with short-term profits. next quarter is what they see, long term don't enter their thinking often at all. never mind that in the long term, if the environment is destroyed, by extension the people who live in that environment are also destroyed. as long as it is none of their kind they don't care.
