Polka music seems to be a popular genre to hate on. A lot of people say they like everything, but polka. I happen to enjoy polka. People also love to hate on Yoko Ono. I actually like some of her music.

Psytrance and synthwave aren't particuarly popular genres to my understanding, so those would be two unpopular genres I enjoy.

EBM (Electronic Body Music) isn't exactly reaching the top sales charts. Hard hitting beats and rarely Major notes, mostly minor. EBM is to Synthpop what Metal is to rock.

Frontline Assembly, "Mindphaser" fron 1992

Japanese Kodo (Wardrum) music. I used to listen to Ondekoza lots when playing "Shogun: Total War"

Needless to say my nickname is inspired from Japanese culture, i had a Shingoku Jidai period a while ago...

I also like some ethnic crossover techno music, i found these guys rocking it in Catalünya Square in Barcelona in 2007:

Minimal Acoustic Band "Akebono" (so it's also Japanese-ish, sue me)

I don't think soca and calypso are necessarily "unpopular." When people are exposed to it, they like it. Calypso was controversial in the old days because of their political and sexual satire. Soca is sort of the "modern" version of calypso--but I don't they the controversy is so great with soca and calypso these days.

For some reason, they don't seem to play much of it in US stations. It seems like they play more Jamaican-influenced music. Like "dancehall," or "reggaeton," things like that.

I wonder if it's because of the "purity" of soca and calypso. That they are associated with Trinidad and Tobago only. Those other things I mentioned are more "fusion" type things. They are not necessarily associated with Jamaica, like Bob Marley-type reggae is.

Even within, plenty of extreme music fans aren't familiar enough to even identify bands that qualify. The term is more popular than the actual genre.
