My referee wants to know why I left my sales job. I don't know what to say. The product was unethical the main boss unbearable

You could try turning your response into a positive.
Something like:
"I felt that job wasn't a great fit, it didn't make the best use of my skills, and I'd do much better in ... (role you are aiming for)... because of my .... (mention something you're good at that's relevant)

Perhaps that particular item/industry was on the decline and you needed to adapt to something new to keep up with the ever shifting market that comes with a sales position.
