I've been trying to buy dedicated MP3 players with really poor luck. I got one to work by changing the battery, but this one has a similar problem to another dud. It gives me three options for playing order: R-A, R-O, & R-R. R-R seems the most random, but it still keeps playing one selection frequently, and then looping on it until a button is pressed.
What I really want is to have a player that will choose randomly from whichever collections I have set as "open," to match the time and mood. (I don't use a 'cell phone.) Any advice on how to manage these things? TIA.

It's not the easiest thing to find a good search string for, is it? Reminds me of a lot of the stuff I'd like to own, it takes a while to put into clear words as there's rarely a term in common usage to describe it.

Judging by the deafening silence on the matter here, maybe specialised techie forums would know more about it? Offhand I'd imagine a not-so-dedicated device with a media player program might be more likely to do the trick. And if it won't do it natively, there's at least some kind of chance of modifying it with a plugin, or with a hack if you know a programmer. But there's this if you can fathom it:

If you can try dedicated players out on a sale-or-return basis, I guess it would be possible to try them all just in case there's something out there that does it. If you buy online it's probably possible to ask a specific question about it there before buying, they might even know the answer.

Thanks. I might have to do something like that. Currently, I've improved things by removing a dozen files that the beast had a strong preference for. Perhaps the easiest hack would be a collection of "mood" SD cards with a special case. I have one more on order, in hopes it won't be DOA like its twin.
