The first commercial TV sets being brought into American homes during the later part of the 40s.

World War 2, and how much different the war would have been if Hitler had accepted Molotov's offer for the Soviet Union/USSR to join the Axis Powers.

Olympic Games cancelled in 1940 and 1944 due to WWII.

In 1948 (London), several great athletes debuted: Emil Zatopek, Alain Mimoun, the Jamaican 4 x 100 relay team and, as an alternate, Roger Bannister. In the 1950s, all of these athletes would really make their breakthroughs.

Fashion, and WWII, and women who filled-in on men's jobs, while they were fighting the war (I have a very fond memory of the story about my mother climbing up on U.S. war planes and affixing the U.S. flag decal to them).

World War 2, Nazis, Japanese Imperialists, The Holocaust, Atomic Bombs, racial segregation, USO girls, domestic housewives, working fathers who always had a pipe in their mouth, their 2.3 kids (a brother, sister, and maybe a baby), married couples sleeping in seperate beds on TV, lots of people openly drinking and smoking, poodle skirts, and black and white TV shows and movies.

Some of that stuff I listed may have been more common in the 1950's but I think it was around in the 1940's too.

Televisions coming into houses and radio shows being replaced with TV shows. The TVs were black-in-white, had only 3 channels and houses typically just had one TV inside.

In postwar America we were all getting new electrical appliances.

In 1947 someone wrote a sci fi short story entitled "A Logic Named Joe" about a new appliance called "a logic" that will be next big thing every household will have to have. A "logic" is...well...its kinda hard to explain. Its kinda like a TV set, but a TV set with a typewriter keyboard attached. You type in questions and it answers them by....connecting to a global system of...kind of a ….world wide web thing. Can you image THAT? Crazy!

Were greaser gangs around in the 1940's?

You know? Those trouble-making teenage boys wearing leather jackets and blue jeans who carried switchblades and had pompadour hairstyles?
