Scrap drives & recycling
People at home not sure if relatives were dead or alive
Men at war in the middle of nowhere or going through Europe
Misinformation from both sides, confusion, terror.
But they had better music than afterwards.

After the war:

Consumerism
Entertainment
Shell-shock
Luxury
Disposable lifestyle beginning
Stan Kenton's jazz music, which kind of sucks.
