Had a strange experience again last night.
If anyone could explain what this is, I'd be interested to hear it.
Or maybe everyone has it and I've only just caught up.

When I'm in bed before sleep, it's like someone suddenly puts a warm, heavy blanket on me.
All my muscles relax instantly (this never happens unless I'm on dope) and I don't want to really explain the rest of the experience as it gets a bit weird from there.
Let's just say I have some intense feelings.

Anyway, this happened last night.
Then I came out of it.
Then I consciously made it happen again.

I thought it could be some kind of sleep paralysis, but you wouldn't be able to do that consciously, would you?
And I'm still awake when this happens, haven't drifted off.
I didn't think to check if I could move during it, I was too in awe of the experience.
I could move freely when I came out of it.

I've had this a few times before.
It actually feels really nice, I'm not scared of it or anything, just really curious to know what it is.

Sounds a bit like lucid dreaming.

One can do it without added substances.

Hypnosis is supposedly a similar state to sleep paralysis, and it's possible to perform self-hypnosis.

I have no experience of either, but seems vaguely feasible.

Does sound like a strange parasomnia kind of thing. I don't think I get quite the same thing, but I do experience Exploding Head Syndrome (seriously, it's a real thing, not a joke.) Happens just as I'm about to nod off - it's like someone lets a firecracker off between my ears, accompanied by a shed-load of migrainey visuals and feeling like I'm falling backwards through the bed - then wide awake with a big adrenaline rush. Scared the s**t out of me the first few times it happened, and I can never predict when it will (mostly when very sleep deprived, though). No idea if I could make it happen on purpose, but since there's nothing pleasant about it, I don't think I'll try!

Some say all hypnotism is really self hypnotism.

I experience many things between the alpha theta phases and Delta. (Deep sleep)

It can be a source and time of creativity including folks this Reader & Righter.

you're going in deep sleep but maintaining your consciousness and so you are awake but your body is *sleeping*. i used to get this ALL the time when I was meditating a lot and my consciousness was generally more *awake* - i slept like 4-6 hours every night, probably because i did a lot of meditation but also because i was struggling with a sleeping disorder. i was too alert. These days i need a lot more sleep - i aim for 9 hrs every night ahah sometimes more. i dunno if it's healthy but at least my sleep is solid.

oh i know what you mean - i sort of enjoy it, you can get lots of creative insights from this. I used to listen to music before going to sleep every night instead of doing meditation and i found that the music would translate into lovely visual and diminish the wordiness of the brain. i certainly am not a huge fan of words before going to sleep so jazz or piano music used to help me relax and be less anxious about "hearing" demons and crazy stuff. i dont notice it anymore these days - my sleep is unusually sound ^^

I did think it could be lucid dreaming.
Every other time I've had a lucid dream it's been just before waking, and I swear I haven't gone to sleep, at least my mind hasn't gone to sleep - it could be my body drifting off before my mind as Gallia suggested, or a meditative state.

And it's not quite the experience Ferris suggests.

Very interesting phenomenon, though.
Would prefer it to exploding head syndrome 100%.

Or maybe there is a Succubus (randy lady demon) that has taken a shine to you! The sciencey explanation does mention sleep paralysis.

I had that experience once or twice many years ago. I felt a blanket being pulled over my body and a female Cockney said, "Pleasant dreams, Mick." That was about 22 or 23 years ago. It was very strange.
