Can people see in your house when the curtains are close?

Depends on the curtains. Just go test it out outside and watch in.

No, I have good quality thick curtains, which have only been opened a couple of times in the last ten years. At the back of the house, I've got steel shutters protecting the main window.

If you can see through your curtains, so can other people. That's usually a good way to tell if people can see through your curtains.
