I heard somewhere that autistic people don't swing their arms while walking and I was wondering if it is true.

Tricky to answer - I sometimes do, sometimes I don't!
However, I certainly did learn to walk without swinging my arms as an infant, and also on tip-toe or the outside edges of my feet. I still have a strange gait because of it, and I can still walk just as fast (always very fast!) with things in my hands as without. I used to get teased a lot at primary school for letting my arms dangle when walking and standing, so I made myself do it as part of my "masking" act. Mostly, I do it out of habit after all these years, but I don't if I'm stressed out and using my hands to stim (wringing my hands, stim toys in pockets etc.)

Kinda hard to swing your hands when they're in your pockets.

Just been out for a walk to see. The answer is no .

Noticably less than people in general, I'd say.

A lot of small children don't swing their arms.

I do swing my arms but I hate doing it. But I do it because I don't want to look weird, although not swinging your arms shouldn't be considered weird but it is. :?

I do the t-rex thing when walking. Arms bent and held against my chest. I know of others who do the same.

Sometimes when you read things like that it pertains more to those with more significant autism rather than those with mild autism.

Some of the time one of my arms swings a little, other times neither swings at all. I don't think I can coordinate moving two legs and swinging two arms simultaneously.

Yes. But it didn‘t came naturally. I had to force myself to do it and I still have to. Other than that, I also walk very clumsy. Often, my feets are streched apart, my shoulders are hanging and I also tend to almost fall over obstacles on a daily basis. Anyone else experiences something similar?

If I'm walking "on autopilot" without paying much attention, rarely. If I'm concentrating on not being clumsy, often!

"Do the Mario!

Swing your arms from side to side

Come on, it's time to go!

Do the Mario!

Take one step, and then again

Let's do the Mario, all together now!

You got it!

It's the Mario!

Do the Mario!

Swing your arms from side to side

Come on, it's time to go!

Do the Mario!

Take one step, and then again

Let's do the Mario, all together now!

Come on now, just like that!"

I march (without arm swinging). Someone once told me I look like I'm coming to arrest somebody.

I used to never swing my arms until jr high when some concerned students taught me to swing them. They were worried about my outcast status or whatever. Today I swing my arms sometimes... I wanna look unapproachable so I prefer not to.

I do it moderately....especially when I want to quicken the pace.
