Danforth shooter identified as Faisal Hussain, 29, of Toronto, SIU says

Quote:
A 10-year-old girl from the GTA and an 18-year-old Toronto woman are the two people killed in the shooting rampage Sunday night on the Danforth, police say.

During a brief update Monday afternoon, police said 16 people were shot in total, including the gunman.

Of the 15 victims, eight were female. The victims range in age from 10 to 59 years old.

The gunman, who was identified by the Special Investigations Unit Monday evening as Faisal Hussain, 29, of Toronto, was also killed.

The killed woman was identified Monday afternoon by other media as Reese Fallon, 18, who lived in Toronto’s Beach neighbourhood.

“She was full of passion and she cared about making a difference in the world and this is a huge loss,” Beaches—East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith told the Star, speaking on behalf of Fallon’s family outside their home.

Police would not speculate on a motive for the shooting.

“I can’t speak to what was in the individual’s mind,” said lead investigator Det.-Sgt. Terry Browne.

Police would say nothing more about the shooter, as his death is now under the mandate of the SIU.

“He received a gunshot wound, but I’m not going to expand on that,” Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders said at the news conference.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday, the gunman was walking along Danforth Ave. and fired shots at groups of people as they were enjoying a night out in the Greektown neighbourhood.

Police found the shooter on Bowden St., between Logan and Broadview Aves., and an exchange of gunfire took place, the SIU said.

The gunman fled the area and was found dead on Danforth Ave. It’s not immediately clear if the man died from self-inflicted gunshots or from gunfire with police.

Thirteen people remain in hospital with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

The gunman was randomly shooting like someone “in a video game,” a witness told the Star.

“He was very relaxed, it was pretty disturbing,” said Lenny Graf, who was with his wife and his son, 9, and daughter, 8.

The normally vibrant strip of the Danforth was eerily quiet in the morning, hours after the shooting. There were no parents walking their children to day camp, no businesses open and no one was grabbing pastries from the local coffee shops.

No one was allowed inside except for a few business owners escorted by police to grab belongings. All morning, residents stopped, stared, shook their heads and muttered words like “unbelievable” and “isn’t this crazy?”

Neighbours traded information and shared shock over the shooting.

Andrew Mantzios had stopped for coffee with friends at Leonadis near the Alexander the Great statue.

At around 10 p.m. he was heading to his car to go home.

“As I was standing by the fountain I heard rapid gunfire and saw the gun discharge,” he said Monday morning, still visibly shaken.

He turned and saw a skinny man dressed all in black firing shots into the crowd on the northeast corner of Logan and Danforth with a black gun like “the ones that you see on the movies.”

This is just sickening. Gun violence is increasing everywhere. I wish every single gun in the world was melted down and remade into something not stupid and evil. But that will never happen because you humans are just naturally evil and destructive. You humans just looove your guns, and killing and violence delights you.

My mom told me my brother and his wife are planning to take a trip to Toronto. Do I need to fear for my brother's life??

Notice that I refer to you as "you humans". That's because I no longer consider myself a part of your evil and disgusting species. I really am an alien, trapped on the wrong planet.

Ha ha, you are not the only one to feel this way. This is a picture that I drew and placed, up front, in my Ph.D. thesis (in theoretical physics). Yeap, I kid you not. I officially included this picture in my Ph.D. thesis: all the professors on my thesis committee had to look at this picture. Not one single soul raised any question.

Yeah yeah. I am different alright. But after you've sweated your way through your Ph.D., who shall you dedicate your hard work to? To you loved ones? You bet, here are my loved ones (yeap, this was really the dedication page in my Ph.D. thesis):

Frankly, after all these decades, I don't remember much what was in my thesis. But these two pages? I'll remember them for the rest of my life.

I think this is the first time I've heard of this particular incident.

Toronto shooting rampage: New details emerge about gunman Faisal Hussain

Quote:
Investigators in Canada have indications that Faisal Hussain visited Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) websites and may have expressed support for the terrorist group, a law enforcement source told CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton.

Investigators are looking into whether Hussain may have lived at one time in Afghanistan and possibly Pakistan, the source said. There is no indication that Hussain was directed by ISIS to carry out the attack.

"At this stage, based on the state of the investigation, which is led by the Toronto police service, there is no connection between that individual and national security," Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said Tuesday.

The assailant's family has said he suffered from psychosis and depression for years but they never imagined he would do such a thing. It was not immediately clear whether he took his own life or was killed by police during the attack Sunday night.

We don't have mass shootings every other weekend like the 'States, but it's depressing when they do happen.
