I had the opposite experience recently, taking something figuratively which was meant literally. The library has a "seed program." I thought maybe it was some sort of mentoring program. Then I realized that is was literally about the sort of seeds you plant. I read the promotion about it, but I forgot about it.

I find that I don't get alot of things probably because I take them literally xD

Talk of cooking reminded me of this one:

So I was teenager and wanted to make myself a cup of cocoa.
My mum was calling instructions from another room: "...mix the cocoa and sugar in a mug and add the milk...then heat it in a pan..."

A few minutes later, I called back. "Are you sure about heating it in a pan?"
I'd only lifted the whole mug and placed it inside the pan!

I thought that those TV characters on the "Sopranos" were cool. So I set off to join the local Mafia.

The first initiation rite they put me through was to order me to "blow up a car".

I tried. But I kept burning my lips on the exhaust pipe!
