I communicate mostly by email, but I'd like to have a 'phone again. My last VOIP provider, Magic Jack, was quite reasonable, but they wasted many days of my life spread over several months trying to avoid a diagnosis of a bad dongle causing my service to deteriorate badly. If they had been up-front about it, I might have bought another, but they wouldn't even offer an extended warranty.
However, now I can't find any new options under about $30 a month, which seems ridiculous. Any recommendations?

Fongo. Totally free talk and text. You get your own phone number.

I don't have a smartphone; I have a desktop on a cable ISP.

I'm on Linux. My previous two 'phone systems ran from a dongle on my cable modem, although the Magic Jack was also mobile.
