What does 'moderate' mean? I think it is more likely a 'left wing extremist' will take the lead for the Dems.

The Democratic Party lost about a third of its registered voters nationally before, during and after the Obama election of 2008. They simply, quietly, deregistered from the party. I suspect that it was all its moderate members seeking refuge in the (libertarian) Tea Party or elsewhere. The same has happened with the Trump election and a lot of its vanishing members. Because both parties are currently driven by extremists, offering moderate candidates would bring back those moderate voters of both parties who disappeared over the years.

The Tea Party is moderate? :-?

The original five founders of the Tea Party were moderate Libertarians based in Massachusetts who held annual tea dumps in Boston Harbor to remind themselves and their federal government that they and it should embrace liberty as the Founders did. The eventual other Tea Parties were ever increasingly Republican until the RNC finally bought the franchise immediately before Sarah Palin was chosen to serve as the Republican candidate and nominee for vice president. By buying the franchise, the RNC rewarded old school Republicans who, as leaders of the various different Tea Parties, turned out to her campaign stops as probably the largest contingent of the Republican presidential campaign of 2008.

Despite any moderate origins for the Tea Party, it morphed into the Randian/Republican astroturf monstrosity most of us know and loathe today.

Which is why I used the term "moderates" in referring to the transition of the Tea Party (which isn't around anymore, is it?) from moderate Libertarians to angry Trump-supporting Republicans to nonexistence. Both parties need to understand their extremism will make them nonexistent, too.

I think Hedges view on things like Porn or BDSM / Fetishes is skewed. To be fair, he is kind of right in regards to large commercial productions or websites having issues of exploitation, but I don't think all adult entertainment is like that. I don't know what he can say about all the amateur content.

I think Trump embodied the status quo to a greater degree, but he hid it under a veil of fabrications like his "drain the swamp" philosophy in which the irony was lost on his voters that he was essentially the "swamp" himself, as were his cronies following the inauguration.

As for the left, there never will be one in America. The US is not a liberal nation, besides maybe San Francisco or Seattle along with a handful of other small pockets (likely in the northern side of the US near the US - Canada border). Bernie wouldn't have stood a chance not because he's a bad candidate but because Americans are terrified of change and socialism. I like Bernie because I think he would bring genuine change to the states, and his supporters are more real in my opinion. That doesn't mean he would ever win the election, which is a shame.

I suppose the take away point is that Americans are a slave to the constitution. I posted this on another forum not long ago and they didn't get it. I think people on here likely will, whether they agree or disagree is a different matter.

If Trump was part of the swamp he would be accepted and the Russia tripe would go away.

Sanders is a hideous candidate. But most Americans support a similar health care system that we have in Europe. Sanders is part of the swamp though. The guy is a fraud. He has supported numerous wars and billion dollar loans for multinational companies. He crowed for the mass killer McCain.

Just where does your infatuation with that con man and demagogue, Trump, come from?

It is Trump's haters who have the obsession with him. It is all they talk about as they can't accept losing an election. They hate democracy unless it goes their way. I just think the left needs to reform and come up with some actual policies. They have nothing. Hopefully Trump gets elected again in 2020.

You don't seem to remember how the right had been obsessed with Obama allegedly not really being an American, or a secret Muslim, when in fact what they were really obsessing over was how he was black. And unlike Trump, there was never any question about the legitimacy of his victory that got him two terms. There was never any thought that Obama had gotten help from our country's enemies.

It is their only response. I don't know what they'll say or do after Trump is gone, other than to think that he's immortal, or that he will rise from the dead and will return in secret before ushering in a new thousand years of paradise on earth.

I like how you both have attributed something irrelevant to my point to me and then argued against the phantom point. Just ridiculous.

I know the "Obama is a Muslim" accusations were moronic. He killed enough Muslims to debunk that theory. It's cause they couldn't attack his policies as they were virtually the same as Bush's.

They'll start a cult. No doubt about it. No way is Trump going to give up having that many people worshipping him, he's gonna pull an L. Ron Hubbard.
