I like to have the local Police/Fire/EMT scanner on in the background when I'm working on my computer. (Always good to have some advance warning when they're coming for me.) Once upon a time you had to have special (moderately expensive) radios to listen, but now it's all online, which is really amazing. The big site is:

https://www.broadcastify.com

I can sit here in the US and listen to local police scanners from Australia, or from the town next door. Visit that site and find your local area and take a listen.

Still trying to work out an assortment of codes used locally. They aren't nationally standardized and vary from one jurisdiction to another. So far it seems to be:

1500 - firearm
1800 - drugs
2300 - alcohol?
3900 - suicide threats
4300 - mentally ill

I think there are a few others I haven't figured out.

I'm a former firefighter/paramedic and EMS dispatcher.
I'd rather have a root canal than listen to the radio.

Speaking as someone who has had a root canal, that is saying a LOT!
